Alteration and redevelopment of the Mendelsohn building, Berlin

New Objectivity

In the time between 1929 and 1930 a new administration building was constructed for the German steel worker's association, according to the future-oriented design by the architects Erich Mendelsohn and Rudolf Eichel, in the style of 'Neue Sachlichkeit' (New Objectivity). The object is located in an exposed position within the urban structure, between the streets Lindenstrasse and Alte Jakobstrasse, directly neighbouring the Jewish Museum.

The war damages had been temporarily repaired in the post war years with the available means. The necessary basic redevelopment at the beginning of the 90ies had to deal with the bearing structure, the sealing of the building (black tank), the technical building equipment (technical centre) and the interior works. The complexity of the scheme required an external project supervision and controlling, transfered to DU, in 1993.

The alteration was performed while parts of the office space were used by the IGM area headquarters and IGM administration office. Therefore, DU also had to synchronise working phases, several temporary relocations and other provisional solutions. The preservation order required, for example, the reproduction of historic windows and doors as well as other facilities, according to the originals.

The stipulated budget was undercut by 10%, the due dates were kept.
