General reinstatement and alteration of the municipal gallery in Lenbachhaus, Munich
The building complex, one of the world’s leading museums, consisting of the original building, ‘Villa Lenbach’ and the extension buildings, was of limited use. In pre-planning, the office of ‘Foster and Partners’, commissioned with the redevelopment, firstly analysed the building history and functionality and created a new room allocation plan, according to user requirements.
DU’s performance mainly included cost and schedule control and overall project co-ordination. In the pre-planning phase, a cost reduction of 7% was achieved. Other cost saving possibilities were notified.
The architectural concept focussed on leaving the core of the historic ensemble unaltered whilst visually exposing ‘Lenbach Villa’.The general reinstatement and the necessary major extensions to the circulation space through the addition of the second floor (cross-bar) as well as the change of room functionality and arrangement are to be realised in stages, maintaining current museum operation.
Therefore, DU was also commissioned with management of the relocation of art and administration into interim rooms for the duration of the construction period.
