Westphalian Museum for Archeology, Herne
Construction exhibition
For years, the Westphalian Museum for Archeology was housed in buildings that were too small and required redevelopment. Therefore, the regional authority ‘Landschaftsverband Westfalen-Lippe’ (LWL), decided to construct a new building in Herne, within the scope of the International Construction Exhibition.
In December 1997, the architect office ‘Busse, Klapp, Brüning’ in Essen won the architect´s competition. The original budget of 25,0 m € was later extended to approx. 28,1 m €, because of a qualitative extension of services. The whole project aimed at a structural improvement of the Ruhr area.
The project requires a sophisticated cost control. In consideraton of high architectural demands, the budget for the structure was limited to 22,0 m €, equalling specific building costs of approx. 470 €/m³ gross volume (cost type 200-700, according to DIN 276).
The exhibition could be inaugurated in due time, on the 27th of March 2003. The fixed budget was maintained, which was mainly a result of extensive saving measures, proposed by the project controllers.
