St. Josef hospital, Wuppertal
all strings in one hand
St. Josef hospital, founded in the 17th century, is one of the oldest hospitals in Wuppertal. Over the years, the building had been gradually modified and extended, according to medical requirements, thus securing the primary healthcare for the inhabitants of Wuppertal-Elberfeld for a long time. Facing the new conditions, owing to the change of the health system, St. Josef Hospital developed to become a centre for orthopaedics and rheumatology.
Surgeries are certainly much more complicated than any construction measure. For the building owner, familiar with surgeries, the redevelopment of the hospital, as a going concern, was an issue for specialists who were involved at an early stage. DU optimised user requirements with regard to available public funds and endowments, supporting the building owner during the whole project.
From 1995 to 2001, the operating theatres, wards and accident and emergency, including the associated service, functional and technical facilities, were developed. The existing structure was decontaminated, modernised and provided with reinforced structural fire protection.
DU coordinated the financing over the investment programs 'IVP 92' and 'IVP 96' as well as endowments. The non-documented structural status played an important role in the cost documentation, requiring a realtime cost control, related to the current planning and construction process.
