Schloss Wilhelmshöhe, Kassel
EXPO - sed
Massive physical damages to the building presented an imminent danger for the paintings exposed in the gallery of Old Masters and the antiquity collection. Therefore, the redevelopment of Schloss Wilhelmshöhe in Kassel, had become badly necessary. Within the scope of an intensive civic participation, the competitor’s solution submitted by the architect Stephan Braunfels was rejected under the aspect of preservation of monuments and historic buildings, for the benefit of a classic mansard roof.
No later than 1997, at the beginning of the planning phase, the opening was planned for July 2000, parallel to the start of EXPO 2000 in Hanover. Extensive carcass alterations were made to eliminate the functional deficiencies of the building. The necessary static reinforcement measures for the protection of the existing structure was a substantial problem due to the critical time aspect of the project.
In co-operation with the client in Kassel, DU realised the whole project, maintaining budget and schedule. The inauguration by the prime minister of Hesse, Mr. Roland Koch, was celebrated in the form of a garden party in Park Wilhelmshöhe, on the 19th of June 2000.
