planning, saving, building

In 2000, the urban development concept by Lindemann architects from Mannheim, won the first prize in the realisation competition, initiated by the city of Mannheim. The unusual architectural concept encompasses a complete museum complex in the center of Hagen. It considers the building substance of ‘Altes Amtsgericht’ (old local court), in need of redevelopment, and the extension of Karl Ernst Osthaus Museum, to be completed with a foyer and the new construction of the Emil Schumacher Museum (ESM).

As a special technical situation, the outer facade and the roof of ESM have been planned as a steel-glass construction, completely encasing the inner concrete cubus, with a clearance of 1.5 to 3.0 metres.

Owing to DU’s great experience in famous museum building projects and its proven success in achievements, the company was involved as project controller, in November 2000.

After DU had become part of the current planning, it was quickly revealed that the architects“pre-planning would go beyond the boundaries of the budgetary limit. As a consequence, DU initiated specific adaptation measure, which led to a cost reduction of more than 30%. During the course of the project, DU will ensure maintenance to the budget, following the basic architectural concept.
